The deepest spiritual experiences I’ve had in my life occurred during long, multi-day (or multi-week) meditation retreats. But in our western world of bite-sized-everything, meditation becomes, for many people, a five-minute practice… once every few days (maybe)… moments of presence, chopped up and disconnected from one another.
While every moment of meditation is helpful, I’ve been thinking for the past few years that it would be nice to create an “online meditation retreat” that lasts for a significant period of time. Something that permeates your life, for days, or even weeks at a time. Except I could never quite figure out how to encapsulate a meditation retreat in an online experience. I never ended up executing on that idea, but Deepak’s 21-day meditation course “Getting Unstuck” seems to be a step in the right direction.
Who is Deepak Chopra?
Over the past few months, I’ve become more and more familiar with the work of Deepak Chopra. In years past, I’d only heard his words in passing, along with colorful third-person opinions about him (from others who had also only heard his words in passing). I had never really realized what he was all about until we interviewed him for the new issue of MedMag.
Deepak came to the United States as a young doctor, to do his residency at an ER in New Jersey. Seeing the suffering, stress, and general unhappiness of his fellow MDs, Deepak was quickly disillusioned with the shiny happy western lifestyle. After a life-changing encounter with Krishnamurti, Deepak decided to make the world a happier place, by teaching meditation & ancient eastern spiritual wisdom. Apparently his teaching & speaking style has resonated deeply with many Americans, as Deepak has been one of the most successful popularizers of meditation in mainstream America over the past few decades.

What is this 21-day meditation course all about?
The course (which is available on the web or via Deepak’s iPhone/Android app) has daily 20min meditations from Oprah & Deepak, which center around the theme of “Getting Unstuck.”
The idea is to listen to each meditation (which includes some wisdom from Oprah & Deepak about a specific aspect of being “stuck” and getting “unstuck”), and then spend the rest of the day contemplating a “centering thought.” I’ve just listened to the first two days’ meditations, but so far, the centering thoughts (things like “I am fulfilled when I can be who I want to be,” and “I’m never stuck when I live in the present”) seem to be nice and helpful.
Doing these types of meditations & contemplations over the course of 21 days can really help people get unstuck, and introduce people to the power of living in the present moment.
