Can CBD be used to enhance our meditation practice?

  • With our lives filled with endless To-Do lists and emails to answer, it is no wonder more people are seeking opportunities to be still, re-center, and become present through meditation.

Cannabidiol, better known as CBD, is a cannabinoid in the cannabis plant. Its surge in popularity over the past decade has welcomed the many published and ongoing clinical research studies to determine where it can fit in our daily lives. But, the question is, can CBD be used to enhance our meditation practice?

CBD has been shown to increase certain neurotransmitters (brain chemicals) in the brain that are linked to reducing our overthinking and anxious thoughts. Unlike its counterpart, tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, CBD cannot make you feel high, but rather it can make you feel a sense of zen when getting into and maintaining a meditative state. When taken before meditations, it can improve your focus and concentration, as well as help enhance your feelings of awareness and sense of grounding into the earth.

Beyond CBD, there are other anti-inflammatory cannabinoids that are coming to the surface that could benefit your meditation practice. Two of the most well-cited are cannabigerol or CBG, and cannabinol or CBN.

CBG, known for promoting a positive mood and calm mind, can be found in Element Apothec’s Calm Cool Collected, while CBN, known for promoting rejuvenative sleep and muscle recovery, can be found in Rest Relax Recover. As a clean, innovative beauty and wellness brand, we decided to include these compounds in addition to CBD to provide you with the best of what the cannabis plant and Mother Nature have to offer.

In addition to cannabinoids, there are components in cannabis called terpenes. These aromatic compounds are rarely given the limelight, but have vital importance when it comes to certain well-researched therapeutic effects. The terpene, limonene, is present in high concentrations in citrus fruits; the tangerine leaf extract and bergamot fruit oil can be found in the Rest Relax Recover tincture and the orange peel oil can be found in the Calm Cool Collected tincture. This fragrant terpene can soothe your central nervous system, increase circulation, and support your immune system. Another terpene, linalool, also in the Calm Cool Collected tincture is able to ease your mind and lift your spirits.

Meditation has been shown to boost your endocannabinoid system–the system in the body that interacts directly with cannabinoids and terpenes to promote homeostasis, or balance. Pairing a meditative practice with taking CBD regularly can optimize the functionality of your endocannabinoid system.

It is important to note that when it comes to integrating CBD products into your life, there is no one-size-fits-all. Everyone’s endocannabinoid system is wired a little bit differently, which means that the dose that makes you feel best could be different from what works for your parent or significant other.

Whether you are looking to add CBD products to your meditation practice, or you are looking to integrate them to your daily self-care routine, it is important that you have a healthcare professional on board who can help you make the best decision for you.
