{"id":2238,"date":"2014-11-24T05:45:44","date_gmt":"2014-11-24T05:45:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.meditationmag.com\/blog\/meditation-improves-romantic-relationships\/"},"modified":"2014-11-24T05:45:44","modified_gmt":"2014-11-24T05:45:44","slug":"meditation-improves-romantic-relationships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.meditationmag.com\/blog\/meditation-improves-romantic-relationships\/","title":{"rendered":"Meditation Improves Romantic Relationships"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Meditation improves romantic relationships.<\/h2>\n<p>Maintaining a meditation practice while in a romantic relationship can sometimes be challenging, but it\u2019s important to keep it up. \u00a0The choice to push yourself to meditate every day\u00a0can often mean the difference between a healthy and an unhealthy relationship.<\/p>\n<p>There are sooo many reasons that people \u201cfall off the wagon\u201d and let their meditation practices falter. \u00a0We\u2019ve all had the challenge of \u201cfinding time\u201d to meditate\u00a0when we\u2019re under a heavy workload, or have a million things to take care of.\u00a0 A less obvious (and perhaps more\u00a0insidious) distraction\u00a0that some meditators encounter is actually far\u00a0more pleasant (and thus more tempting) than a hectic work-life: the comfort of a close intimate relationship with a partner.<\/p>\n<p>If your partner is into meditation, great! \u00a0You can meditate together, and it should be relatively easy to maintain your personal practice. \u00a0However, if your partner is, for whatever reason, resistant to meditation, or simply doesn\u2019t have a practice of his or her own, you may find yourself in a position where you are tempted to spend your free time with your partner, rather than sitting by yourself.<\/p>\n<p>I have fallen into this trap myself. \u00a0It\u2019s easy to get sucked into the comfort of a lifestyle of intimate moments; given the choice between getting into bed with your soft, warm, loving cuddle-buddy and sitting alone with your eyes closed and your back straight, there\u2019s a natural inclination toward the comfort, pleasure, and relaxation you get from being with your partner.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is, when you let your meditation practice fall into disrepair, you start to lose all of those amazing psycho-spiritual benefits that made your life so amazing as a single person\u2026 the same psycho-spiritual benefits that make you a better, more present, more empathetic lover. \u00a0When you start to lose those beautiful aspects of yourself, your relationship suffers as a result.<\/p>\n<p>Even more striking than the loss of presence and empathy is the deterioration of equanimity within the relationship. \u00a0Every relationship has stressors. \u00a0You want to do this, but your partner wants to do that. \u00a0You want to live here, but your partner wants to live there. \u00a0You think it\u2019s OK to have close friends of the opposite sex, but your partner doesn\u2019t. \u00a0These elements of discord in your relationship can make you feel stressed out, and when your relationship stresses you out, it doesn\u2019t bode well for the health & longevity of the relationship. \u00a0However, if you do actively maintain\u00a0a daily meditation practice for yourself, even if your partner does not, you bring an element of equanimity into the stressors, day by day, as they arise. \u00a0This can help to nip unhealthy\u00a0relationship patterns\u00a0like resentment, discontent, and adversarialism in the bud, ensure that your relationship stays happy\u00a0& healthy, and allow you to make good, clear-headed relationship decisions.<\/p>\n<p>So, take a look at your own spiritual\u00a0practice. \u00a0Are you using your cuddle-buddy as an excuse to choose short-term pleasure over long-term\u00a0bliss? \u00a0Remember\u2026 if you want to keep up this beautiful relationship, you\u2019ll be much better equipped to do so if you take some time away from your partner to just sit, and be, by yourself, in the present moment.<\/p>\n<p>Namaste \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>May all beings be happy!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maintaining a meditation practice while in a romantic relationship can sometimes be challenging, but it&#8217;s important to keep it up.
