We pride ourselves on logic and reason. I grew up in this society, so I know how it is.<\/p>\n<p>As a teenager and young adult, I suffered greatly from the effects of an over-active and out-of-control mind. I spent (literally) thousands of hours thinking about psychology, analyzing others and exploring the depths of my own mind, in order to \u201cbe my own therapist.\u201d I was constantly analyzing my mind, how it worked, and how to make myself \u201chappier.\u201d It didn\u2019t really help. In fact, it kind of made me crazy for a while.<\/p>\n<p>If some long-haired tie-dyed Tommy-Chong-sounding hippie came to me at that time, and told me, <em>\u201cHey man, all you\u2019ve got to do is meditate man,\u201d<\/em> I probably wouldn\u2019t have given it much thought. If some no-haired sober-faced orange-robed Buddhist monk came to me and said<em> \u201cYou must meditate in order to conquer Dukkha!\u201d<\/em> I would probably have thought he was just some crazy religious person expressing some crazy dogma from his belief system.<\/p>\n<p>There are hundreds\u00a0of these people on the Internet, yet none of them were able to reach me in my time of need.<\/p>\n<p>What I really needed was for someone to put meditation in terms that I could understand through my thought-oriented \u201cWestern\u201d paradigm. I needed someone to explain <em>why<\/em> I should meditate, and how it would benefit me. Meditators always talk about the \u201cbenefits\u201d of meditation, but they tend to put them in such vague terms as \u201cfinding your center\u201d and \u201cliving in the now\u201d that most western people don\u2019t even know they\u2019re talking about!<\/p>\n<p>The funny thing is, now that I have experienced the benefits of meditation for myself, I can see that it is actually the solution to all of the problems I was having as a young adult. It is the solution to the problems of tens of millions of people across the USA and European Union, who are currently wasting billions of dollars every year on psychiatric treatment and drugs that are only making things worse. Meditation is the cure for the \u201cdisorders,\u201d but it won\u2019t just take you back to \u201cneutral;\u201d it will take you all the way up, into the realms of boundless joy and happiness. And it will awaken you to the spiritual reality of consciousness itself.<\/p>\n<p>So, without further ado, here is a short list of the benefits of meditation, in western terms.<span id=\"more-58\"><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Psychological\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Cure ADHD with Meditation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.meditationmag.com\/meditation-psychology\/meditation-cure-adhd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meditation is the cure for ADD \/ ADHD<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Meditation is the cure for anxiety (all types)<\/li>\n<li>Meditation is the cure for depression<\/li>\n<li>Meditation is the cure for <a title=\"How to Cure Bipolar Disorder With\u00a0Meditation\" href=\"http:\/\/kevinellerton.tumblr.com\/post\/42232454529\/meditation-is-the-cure-for-bipolar-disorder\">bipolar (manic-depressive) disorder<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Meditation Is The Cure For PTSD\" href=\"https:\/\/www.meditationmag.com\/meditation-psychology\/cure-ptsd-with-meditation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meditation is the cure for PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Meditation is the cure for low self-esteem<\/li>\n<li>Meditation is the cure for anger problems<\/li>\n<li>Meditation is the cure for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)<\/li>\n<li>Meditation is the cure for compulsive behaviors (e.g. gambling)<\/li>\n<li>Meditation is the cure for addictions (smoking, alcohol, etc)<\/li>\n<li>Meditation is the cure for <a title=\"The Difference Between Nice and Kind\" href=\"http:\/\/kevinellerton.tumblr.com\/nice-and-kind\">narcissism<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Meditation is the cure for oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)<\/li>\n<li>Meditation is the cure for antisocial personality disorder<\/li>\n<li>Meditation is the cure for insomnia<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Meditation Is The Cure For Loneliness\" href=\"http:\/\/kevinellerton.com\/search\/lonely\">Meditation is the cure for loneliness<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Meditation is the cure for psychogenic erectile dysfunction<\/li>\n<li>Meditation is the cure for body dysmorphic disorder (BDD)<\/li>\n<li>Meditation is the cure for all Adjustment Disorders<\/li>\n<li>Meditation is the cure for all Anxiety Disorders<\/li>\n<li>Meditation is the cure for all Impulse-Control Disorders<\/li>\n<li>While meditation has not yet been proven to reduce the effects of Cognitive, Psychotic, or Developmental Disorders like Schizophrenia, Alzheimer\u2019s Disease, Mental Retardation and Dementia, people who have had many years of experience with meditation will likely show a markedly lower level of anxiety than is normally expected for people experiencing these conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Meditation increases subjective feelings of happiness<\/li>\n<li>Meditation increases subjective feelings of wellness<\/li>\n<li>Meditation increases subjective feelings of joy<\/li>\n<li>Meditation increases subjective feelings of satisfaction<\/li>\n<li>Meditation increases subjective feelings of contentment<\/li>\n<li>Meditation may help regulate levels of dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins in the brain<\/li>\n<li>Meditation allows one to <a title=\"Become a Supervert! Transcend Introversion &amp; Extraversion Through\u00a0Meditation.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.meditationmag.com\/meditation-psychology\/transcend-introversion-extraversion-through-meditation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">switch between introversion and extraversion at will<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Physical\n<ul>\n<li>Meditation relaxes your body and relieves muscle tension<\/li>\n<li>Meditation allows your body to use energy more efficiently<\/li>\n<li>Meditation reduces your need for sleep<\/li>\n<li>Meditation helps to moderate your blood pressure<\/li>\n<li>Meditation reduces your risk of heart disease<\/li>\n<li>Meditation can help you reduce your body fat, and keep it off<\/li>\n<li>Meditation can help you gain muscle mass, and keep it on<\/li>\n<li>The physical postures of lotus-style meditation improve your posture, strengthen your core and lower back, and improve your flexibility<\/li>\n<li>Meditation fosters behavior patterns that result in the general health of the body<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Study: Meditation Can Help Prevent Flu\" href=\"https:\/\/www.meditationmag.com\/meditation-news\/study-meditation-can-help-prevent-flu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meditation boosts your immune system and helps prevent cold\/flu<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Behavioral\n<ul>\n<li>Meditation decreases laziness<\/li>\n<li>Meditation increases productive behavior<\/li>\n<li>Meditation increases pro-social behavior<\/li>\n<li>Meditation reduces clumsiness<\/li>\n<li>Meditation improves athletic abilities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Interpersonal\n<ul>\n<li>Meditation reduces social anxiety and shyness<\/li>\n<li>Meditation increases <a title=\"Become a Supervert! Transcend Introversion &amp; Extraversion Through\u00a0Meditation.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.meditationmag.com\/meditation-psychology\/transcend-introversion-extraversion-through-meditation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">friendly and outgoing behaviors<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Meditation increases charisma<\/li>\n<li>Meditation increases <a title=\"The Difference Between Nice and Kind\" href=\"https:\/\/www.meditationmag.com\/meditation-psychology\/nice-vs-kind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">empathy<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Meditation makes you a more attractive friend<\/li>\n<li>Meditation makes you a more attractive lover<\/li>\n<li>Meditation allows you to connect more deeply with other people<\/li>\n<li>Meditation increases <a title=\"The Difference Between Nice and Kind\" href=\"https:\/\/www.meditationmag.com\/meditation-psychology\/nice-vs-kind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">compassion and loving-kindness<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Meditation increases the desire to help people who are in need<\/li>\n<li>Meditation increases assertiveness<\/li>\n<li>Meditation increases honesty<\/li>\n<li>Meditation increases <a title=\"The Difference Between Nice and Kind\" href=\"https:\/\/www.meditationmag.com\/meditation-psychology\/nice-vs-kind\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kindness and decreases niceness<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Meditation fosters \u201clove for all living beings\u201d (including one\u2019s self)<\/li>\n<li>Meditation reduces anger and aggressiveness<\/li>\n<li>Meditation reduces the tendency to judge others critically<\/li>\n<li>Meditation reduces hatred<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Societal\n<ul>\n<li>Look at the individuals described above; sane and healthy, honest and assertive, happy and productive, kind and compassionate, active and helpful. They have replaced their anger, hatred, and selfishness with peace, love, and togetherness. Just think what the world would be like if it were filled with this type of person! There would be no crime, no war (meditation programs are now being used in prisons in India and the USA and are having incredible effects). Our economies would flourish with the unimaginable energy of billions of people working together to make the world a better place, instead of wasting their time and energy fighting with each other and stealing money out of the stock market. You may say I\u2019m a dreamer, but I\u2019m not the only one. This is not an all-or-nothing type of thing. If you start meditating today, and a thousand more start this month, and a thousand more next month\u2026 this will make a significant impact. If 10% of the people in this world have experience with meditation, that\u2019s great. If 11% are meditating, that\u2019s even better.<\/li>\n<li>To read more about the societal impact of meditation, click here.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Benefits That Are Hard To Explain In Scientific Terms\n<ul>\n<li>Meditation deepens spiritual perception<\/li>\n<li>Meditation answers the question \u201cWho am I?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Meditation answers the question \u201cWhat is the meaning of life?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Meditation answers the question \u201cWhat is my purpose in life?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Meditation creates \u201cpeace of mind\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Becoming Truly Alive Through Meditation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.meditationmag.com\/benefits-of-meditation\/becoming-truly-alive-through-meditation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meditation deepens one\u2019s experience of life<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Meditation helps you \u201cfind your center\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Meditation allows you to \u201clive in the now\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Meditation deepens one\u2019s connection with the Universe<\/li>\n<li>Meditation allows one to perceive the Nature of Reality<\/li>\n<li>Meditation allows one to perceive the Source of All Things (some choose to call this \u201cGod\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>Meditation allows one to develop an unconditional happiness that transcends all material things, events, and circumstances.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a matter of fact, I\u2019m sure that there are many other benefits of meditation that I myself am not aware of. These effects are simply the ones that I am able to perceive through my own experience, and through my understanding of meditation\u2019s effects on the brain.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I\u2019m not going to sit here right now and write a 100,000-word article going into detail about each of these benefits. What I will do is to spend the next few weeks (months?) writing individual articles going into depth about specific benefits, and linking this article to them to make things easier for you.
